HSE Emergency First Aid At Work Certificate (EFAW)

Description

When the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reviewed their training schemes recently they introduced a 1 day qualification called Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW). This course supersedes the appointed person’s course and certification is valid for 3 years. The course is designed to meet the needs of both high and low risk work environments, dependant on employee numbers and risk.

Course Duration

6 hours teaching (1 day).

Learning outcomes

In case of an emergency, each student will be able to draw on the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are taught on the course. They will then have the ability and confidence to apply these in their working environment. Learning outcomes are listed below:

  • - Manage an incident
  • - Recognise and determine life threatening conditions
  • - Treat an unconscious casualty
  • - Perform CPR on an adult competently
  • - Recognise and treat for shock
  • - Have the knowledge to control bleeding

Learning and Teaching Methods

A variety of learning and teaching methods will be employed, including presentation and discussion, self directed learning and scenarios. Instructor availability, as far as is practical, will be on hand to support and guide students at all times.

Assessment and Certification

Continually assessment by the instructor as there is no final assessment. After completing the course successful students will receive a HSE certificate valid for 3 years.

HSE First Aid at Work (FAW)

Description

This course is approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and allows the successful students to be called First Aiders at work on completion. The course is legally compliant with the current Health and Safety (first aid) Regulations 1981.

Course Duration

The First Aid at Work course is run over 3 days with at least 18 hours teaching, which includes the final practical assessment. However, to meet employer’s needs, the course can be run over a longer period, but not exceeding 10 weeks. This option needs to be arranged in advance.

In case of an emergency, each student will be able to draw on the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are taught on the course. They will then have the ability and confidence to apply these in their working environment. Learning outcomes are listed below:

To ensure that a student can demonstrate competency there will be a final assessment. This will require the student to demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge relating to an emergency in the work place. After completing the assessment successful students will receive a HSE certificate valid for 3 years.

This course allows those who hold a FAW certificate to re-qualify for a further 3 years. This 2 day course will refresh and update skills previously learnt. Please note that those who attend MUST hold a FAW certificate not out of date by more than 28 days on completion of the course.

Course Duration

12 hours teaching (2 days). However, to meet employer’s needs, the course can be run over a longer period, but not exceeding 6 weeks. This option needs to be arranged in advance.

Description

The HSE advocates that all first aid trained staff should receive annual refresher training; in addition to their 3 yearly requalification. UK Paramedical strongly supports this recommendation. This refresher course provides an opportunity for any staff that has previously attended an EFAW or FAW course, to practise and update their skills and knowledge. This is an excellent way of maintaining previously learnt knowledge in a relaxed and informal environment.

Description

This course has been structured to meet the needs of anybody working with young children. It is appropriate for childminders, au pairs, nursery and school staff working with this age group. This first aid qualification is compliant with the standards stipulated for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It also satisfies the regulations required by Ofsted. This 12 hour paediatric first aid course is ideal for workers in the school and pre-school environment and enables those persons working within childcare a sound knowledge and understanding of adult, child and baby first aid procedures.

Description

Knowing what to do when someone has a cardiac arrest is important. If you can do CPR you can buy precious time before professional help arrives. Being able to do perform effective CPR more than doubles the chance of survival. Our time on the road has shown us that the unthinkable does happen to adults and children alike. This course gives you the peace of mind that you could make a decisive intervention that could mean the difference between life and death before help arrives. This course teaches the basic life support algorithms for adults, children and babies. The information is taken directly from the Resuscitation Guidelines 2010 as used by all practicing health care professionals.

Course Duration

3 hours teaching.

 - AED Operator

AED Operator

Description

An AED is a simple life saving device, now located in public places such as airports, sporting stadiums and supermarkets. It has been clinically proven that early defibrillation increases the likelihood of survival and without this intervention mortality significantly increases. Good quality CPR prior to defibrillation is also a vital factor. This course will teach you how to perform effective CPR and operate an AED if required in an emergency situation. This course teaches the essential skills required by an AED operator and gives students the confidence and knowledge to know what to do in this kind of emergency. No previous first aid knowledge is necessary to attend an AED course, but for those (FAW and EFAW students) wishing to increase there skill sets this is the ideal course.

3 – 4 hours teaching.

Description

This course has been designed by healthcare professionals who are state registered. Its syllabus is geared towards those who have a “duty of care” within the healthcare community. These could be General Practitioners (GPs), Nurses, those that work with the elderly or first aiders at sporting events. This is the minimum qualification required, but the course is also of great relevance to those who practise daily, and gives them an opportunity to brush up on their Basic Life Support (BLS) skills.
The advantage of this course is that it can be tailor made to your requests and specifications, for example:

  • - It could be used as an annual refresher course, giving certification
  • - You may wish to include the use of pocket masks, airway adjuncts and defibrillation during a cardiac arrest
  • - The techniques in maintaining a clear airway in an unconscious patient with suspected C-spine fracture
